  • About

The building blocks of Martin Creed’s art are the objects, words, emotions and spaces of everyday life. His artworks often involve disarmingly simple modifications of things that we may otherwise overlook, revealing them to be stranger and more poetic than we ever could have imagined.

Influenced by artists associated with the beginnings of conceptual art in the late 1960s, some of Creed’s artworks are conceived as sets of instructions. 'Work no 2821: half the air in a given space' stipulates that exactly half the volume of air in a room be contained in yellow balloons.

'Work no 2821' also evokes installations created by
surrealist artists in the first half of the 20th century in that transformed galleries into discombobulating environments. Such experiments had the effect of focusing attention on the space itself and on the actions of viewers as they experienced art.
