About
Tuckson’s breakthrough into abstraction seems to have occurred in his works drawn and painted onto newspaper. The newspaper used as a support in this work is dated 28th June 1970. Tuckson started drawing onto newspaper in the mid to late 1950s and continued this practice throughout the 1960s and 70s. Drawing onto non-precious material such as newspaper allowed Tuckson greater freedom of expression and the ability to try out and generate new ideas. The urgency of this work also reflects Tuckson’s belief that painting should be a direct manifestation of the spirit. This work demonstrates Tuckson’s ability to make works that are simultaneously clear, gestural, sensitive and decisive.
