  • About

Joe Tilson was one of the leading figures of British pop art. His experimental wood reliefs of the 1960s are witty and quirky and drew on American popular culture. Not entirely a painting or a sculpture, these ‘object paintings’ made from everyday materials and incorporating text were ground-breaking at the time.

‘Look’ 2002, ‘Ziggurat’ 2002 and ‘Secret’ 2003 are based on large painted wood reliefs he exhibited in the British pavilion at the 32nd Venice Biennale in 1964. Twelve works varying in size, some as large as 2 square metres, were exhibited. A skilled carpenter and joiner, Tilson carved and constructed the reliefs by hand.
