About
Janinet created this portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette of France, shown here at the age of 21, from four separate printing plates, each inked in either red, yellow or black. Janinet was a pioneer of colour printing in the 1770s. In this print he was trying to simulate the appearance of a pastel drawing by printing the multiple plates in different colours. The ornamental frame was printed on a separate sheet: the portrait print was then cut into an oval and glued into the printed frame.
