About
Shi Zhiying is a contemporary artist who studied Chinese ink painting and calligraphy before moving to oil painting. ‘Cave of ten thousand Buddhas no 3’ was inspired by the south wall of China’s Longmen (Dragon’s Gate) Grottoes in Luoyang, Henan. Carved between the 5th and 8th centuries, the limestone caves were made to hold over 110,000 Buddhist sculptures, ranging in height from 2.5 cm to over 17 metres.
Shi Zhiying’s work reflects her fascination for the Buddhist art of Asia and the melancholy appeal of ancient sites, especially ruins. Of her work she said:
‘My painting is like meditation; a slow and peaceful process that takes a long time to develop. Buddhist scripture suggests eliminating all that is inessential to distil the essence. Simplicity is reality.’
