This scene from the sacred Bhagavata Purana text illustrates the love of Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, as they float atop the cosmic waters. In his cosmic form, Vishnu the preserver of the world, is known as Narayana, literally one who abides in the water or Padmanabha (one with the lotus navel). This painting depicts the Hindu scene of creation where Vishnu waking from his periodic sleep is found reclining on the multi-headed serpent called Sesha (end) or Ananta (eternity), floating on the waters of the universe. Brahma, the four-headed god of creation emerges from a lotus that springs from Vishnu’s navel and is occupied creating a new universe and Lakshmi is seated at Vishnu's feet.
