Further information

The artist's name derives from his habit of signing prints with a small die. He may have been the son of the engraver, Marcantonio Raimondi, with whom he worked in Rome making prints after Raphael's designs. Venus set Psyche the task of going to the underworld and procuring from Proserpine some of her beauty in a box for Venus's use. Psyche was warned not to open the box, but on her way back her curiosity got the better of her and a deathly sleep enveloped her. Cupid saw this and flew to her rescue.
