  • About

Images such as this are known as Kalighat paintings, after the famous Kalighat temple in Kolkata (Calcutta) dedicated to Kali, the fearsome goddess of time and death. Kalighat paintings developed as inexpensive souvenirs for sale to pilgrims visiting the temple and were intended to aid domestic worship. In this painting the great god Shiva is shown seated with his consort Parvati (Uma) sleeping in his lap.
