    When he worked in pastel on black paper, as in this case, another dimension is added, suggesting night or something sombre.

    '... I wanted to get a picture in glowing, rich autumnal colours that would convey the kind of anxiety/not anxiety, sort of melancholy of autumn. I always react fairly strongly to weather conditions. Autumn - never comfortable, particularly in England. It always conveys the ending of things to me. The idea of termination was perhaps the incentive behind this picture', Gleeson quoted in Renée Free's unpublished catalogue of James Gleeson's work.
