  • About

During his 47 years in France, Rupert Bunny seamlessly immersed himself in Parisian society, becoming one of the few Australian artists to brilliantly capture the vivaciousness of French society at the turn of the 20th century. He spent the summer of 1908 in the fashionable beachside resort Saint-George-de-Didonne, near Royan, where he recorded in numerous pencil and oil studies a growing middle class with time to indulge in leisure activities. The painting was later completed in his studio in Paris where he shaped it into a view of family and friends, chatting and relaxing in the open air. The scene epitomises the glamour of an endless summer which would soon be swept away by the First World War.
