This illustration of James Barnet's proposed combined Library, Museum and Art Gallery appeared in the 'Sydney Mail' on 14 June 1879. Only one small part of the overall scheme was completed: the wing that forms part of the Australian Museum on College Street opposite Hyde Park. Had the building gone ahead, Sydney would have had a similar combined complex of cultural institutions to Melbourne.
