As the inscription on the back of this photograph makes clear, this print is a copy of an original photograph that was in the possession of the author Patrick White. White gave the Art Gallery of New South Wales permission to copy the photograph in 1969.
The painting above the mantlepiece is a "Madonna and Child" c.1947 by De Maistre. This was one of De Maistre’s earliest works with an overtly religious theme. It is closely related to his earlier modernist portraiture work and the work even includes the patterned yellow chair used in his "Portrait of Mrs Florence Bevan".
