Sidney Nolan's father and mother

- Further information
Sidney Nolan’s father, Sidney Henry Nolan, joined the army in March of 1916 at the age of 22. When he joined he noted that he was single, so Dora Irene Sutherland (standing on his left) must have been engaged to him when this photograph was taken. Nolan was discharged 4 months later as ‘medically unfit’ due to rheumatism. He and Dora were married later that year.
This copy of a vintage photograph from the family photograph album was made by Sidney Nolan in 1967 and given to Storry Walton, who used it in the documentary he made for the ABC entitled 'This Dreaming Spinning Thing'. Alan Ashbolt worked with Walton on the documentary and George Johnston wrote the script.
