In 1929 Bertram Mackennal was commissioned to create a statue of Archbishop Kelly for St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. The statue was to match that of Cardinal Moran, made by Mackennal in 1928. Difficulties in raising money for the statue delayed its completion, and it was eventually cast in bronze after the artist's death and not unveiled until 1933.
