    Eliezer Montefiore was one of the inaugural trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, appointed on 25 January 1876. When Sir Alfred Stephen retired in 1889, Montefiore was appointed the second president of the trustees. In 1892 he became the first director of the gallery, a post he held until his death on 22 October 1894. Montefiore was also an artist and several of his works are held in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
