  • About

This heraldic composition shows the figure of death accosting a young woman dressed in a Nuremberg bridal gown. The figure of death is disguised as wild man (a traditional figure of Germanic folklore) whose true identity is revealed by the skull on his shield. The helmet, with its soaring wings and elaborate tendrils, is a brilliant example of Dürer's virtuosity as an engraver of ornament.
