Amir-ul-umra Ali Mardan Khan the father of the subject of this portrait, Khuda-banda Khan, was appointed the governor of Kashmir by Shahjahan. He was a general and nobleman held in great esteem by Shahjahan. Compare with the portrait of Ali Mardan Khan held in the National Museum, Delhi. Published in Daljeet (1999) "Mughal and Deccani Painting", pg.81.
