    Since ancient times, today's Thailand has been the meeting place for diverse cultures from the region. The first known state in Thailand was the Dvaravati kingdom which was peopled by the Mon race from lower Burma and flourished from the sixth to eleventh centuries. The Mon Buddha is characterized by oversize curls and bulging eyelids. Terracotta pieces such this one are thought to have been attached to temple walls.
