From a distant land

Find this man.

This painting by David Davies shows a man reading a letter from someone far away in another country. It used to take a long time for letters to reach Australia in the 1880s as they had to be sent by ship and delivered by a person on horseback.

Spot the postman on his horse.

Notice how dark the room is. What things can you see that belong to the man? What do they tell us about him and his life?

Look at the expression on the man’s face. How do you think he is feeling?

Imagine what the letter says and write it down.
