Tutini

Find this group of sculptures.

These tutini were carved and decorated by Tiwi artists from Melville Island, Northern Territory, specially for the Gallery. They were made to show visitors the types of grave posts that are traditionally used in Tiwi culture as a final ‘good-bye’ for someone who has died.

Look at the different patterns and the shape of the tops of the posts.

Write a list of words to describe each one.

Name the colours you can see.

Create your own patterns using dots, lines and shapes.
