The lost prince and the winter queen education kit

This online kit for the The lost prince and the winter queen is designed for Years K-12, and includes questions and activities.

The exhibition presents two royal portraits from London’s National Portrait Gallery. Painted around 1610 by the English court portraitist Robert Peake the Elder, they depict two children of King James I of England: Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales aged 16; and Princess Elizabeth aged 14.

These royal children led extraordinary lives: Henry was the popular and promising heir to the throne, but died suddenly at the age of 18; and Elizabeth briefly became Queen of Bohemia – earning her the title ‘the winter queen – only to live most of her life in exile.
Peake’s portraits convey all the hope and ambition invested in Henry and Elizabeth before their premature demise and downfall. They also typify the Jacobean style of portraiture with their lean, stylised figures, jewel-like colouring and dense, decorative patterning.
