photographs by Alex Poignant

Sidney Nolan Design for Moonboy backcloth for 'The rite of spring’ 1962, private collection, © the Trustees of the Sidney Nolan Trust

Forty-five years after the London premiere of the Royal Ballet’s production of Stravinsky’s Rite of spring at Covent Garden, this display celebrates the anniversary with a selection of photographs taken by Axel Poignant during rehearsals.

Also featured are Sidney Nolan’s designs for the décor and costumes, together with a group of images taken in Arnhem Land in the 1950s by Poignant which inspired them. A spectacular re-creation of Nolan’s Moonboy backcloth marks the occasion.
