The matter of the masters

Janet Laurence The matter of the masters 2017, installation view © Janet Laurence

Recalling a wondrous ‘cabinet of curiosities’, this display explores a fascinating intersection of art, science and nature in the work of Rembrandt and other Dutch masters.

The matter of the masters, by acclaimed Sydney-based artist Janet Laurence, is inspired by research and analysis undertaken on Dutch paintings in the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands by conservators.

A selection of works from this acclaimed collection is on display in the Gallery in Rembrandt and the Dutch golden age: masterpieces from the Rijksmuseum.

The field of paintings conservation, especially the study of artists’ materials and their origins, is of particular interest to Laurence, who states: ‘I believe this will be an invaluable contribution in both revealing the work of conservationists and also giving access to the public of the hidden history within a painting’.
