In 2011 Dr Jim Masselos donated to the Art Gallery of NSW Archive a collection of images on paper related to India. This extraordinary gift ranges from early European woodcuts to later engravings and etchings, Indian prints, lithographs and chromolithographs as well as photographs, posters, paintings and drawings – a selection of which is on display.
A distinguished Australian scholar on the subcontinent, Masselos has written extensively in the areas of Indian culture, art and politics. He collected these visual materials for teaching and research over the span of his career, which has ranged from studies at the University of Bombay in the 1960s and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in the 1970s, to lecturing at the University of Sydney, where he was promoted to Reader in the History Department and is now an Honorary Reader in the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry.
