Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes
HSC year: 2014, ARTEXPRESS year: 2015
Expressive form: Sculpture
The figures in my work are trying to regain a sense of self and identity. They are depicted in a raw and highly emotive state, liberating themselves from the deceptive cover of the persona and the power of subconscious impulses. I used a white crackle glaze with dark Indian ink rubbed in to physically reflect emotional and metaphysical entrapment. The androgynous figures are seen in an agonising state of deterioration, and frustration, highlighting the compromises made between the individual and society. However, it is up to the audience to decide whether those inside are trapped, or those outside are excluded…
Influences: Alberto Giacometti, Ron Mueck, Edgar Degas, contemporary Chinese sculpture techniques/glaze
