Art Gallery of New South Wales welcomes Miranda Carroll to the position of Director of Public Engagement

The Art Gallery of New South Wales has welcomed Miranda Carroll, a leading art museum communications professional, to the position of Director of Public Engagement.
Carroll comes to Sydney from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where she was Senior Director of Communications for the past eight years.
Of the appointment, director Dr Michael Brand said he was delighted that such an experienced global art museum leader has joined the Art Gallery of NSW at this significant time in its history – as the institution’s 150-year anniversary approaches and as it works towards its Sydney Modern expansion vision.
“At LACMA, Miranda played a pivotal role conceptualising, developing and implementing strategies to raise the museum’s profile and visibility locally, nationally and internationally and to increase its audiences.
“With the Sydney Modern Project we are also reaching out to new audiences and Miranda’s expertise and experience working on LACMA’s high-profile expansion will assist the Gallery to be recognised internationally as creating one of the world’s most exciting art museum experiences,” Brand said.
Carroll has significant leadership experience in museums and galleries in communications as well as in visitor experience.
Carroll said, “I’m delighted to arrive at this pivotal moment for the Gallery and to work with my new colleagues to realise our expansion project.
“I’m particularly pleased to have the opportunity to assist the Gallery to adopt an even more global vision that will increase our ability to establish creative partnerships around the world,” Carroll added.
Carroll has held previous roles in art museums across three continents during her career including in the UK at the National Gallery, London (until 2004) and in Qatar for the opening of the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha (2008) as well as in the US.
In Los Angeles aside from LACMA, Carroll also held positions in communications at institutions including the Hammer Museum at UCLA and the J. Paul Getty Trust.
In her role as director of the public engagement division, Carroll oversees the Gallery’s teams responsible for public programs; learning and participation; web/digital content; marketing and communications; design, and publishing.
Carroll completes the Gallery’s executive team alongside Maud Page, deputy director and director of collections; Hakan Harman, COO and John Richardson, director of development.
