Norman Carter Self-portrait

oil on canvas on board

37.2 x 45 cm stretcher; 56.1 x 63.9 cm frame

The painting now in the Art Gallery of NSW collection is almost certainly the Norman Carter portrait noted as being removed from the Archibald Prize exhibition in a registrar’s list of March 1922 – at the same time that the then National Art Gallery of New South Wales acquired a Carter self-portrait from Gallery trustee Howard Hinton. The prior interest in this painting when it was exhibited at the Society of Artists’ Annual Exhibition in mid 1921, and Hinton’s purchase with the intention of giving it to the Gallery, are also indications that this is the same artwork.

It is one of four works Norman Carter entered into the inaugural Archibald Prize.
