John Longstaff Sir John Sulman

This portrait of architect John Sulman (1849–1934) by John Longstaff is now in the Art Gallery of NSW collection.

Sulman was a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW from 1899 to 1934 and president from 1919 until his death in 1934. His children endowed the Sir John Sulman Prize for a genre/subject painting or a mural/mural project, to be awarded annually in conjunction with the Archibald and Wynne Prizes. Sulman’s architectural work in Sydney includes the Women’s College at the University of Sydney, the Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital at Concord and Presbyterian churches in Woollahra, Manly and Randwick.
