This portrait by William Dargie of Australian Army officer Edmund (Ned) Herring (1892-1982) is now in the collection of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. It was completed while Dargie was an official war artist.

Whereas Dargie’s 1944 Archibald winning portrait was almost lost at sea, the half-finished portrait of Herring was in Dargie’s studio when a fire broke out in the building; Dargie ran out to the street with the painting under his arm.
