The NSW Bar Association commissioned Mary Edwell-Burke to paint this portrait – exhibited in the 1947 Archibald Prize – of lawyer Frederick Richard Jordan (1881–1949), who was chief justice of NSW from 1934 until his death. A dispute arose over the final painting, apparently over the inclusion of the sprig of greenery in the foreground.
The work now hangs in the Banco Court building of the Supreme Court of NSW, along with another portrait of Jordan by William Dargie which was commissioned by the NSW Bar Association.
