Archibald Prize 1953

Entries: 196 (72 selected)
Exhibition dates: 23 January to 28 February 1954
Only selected works were exhibited; each artist could submit up to two works

A new system of preferential voting for the Archibald winner was introduced following previous protests. Each Gallery trustee voted for ten works, in order of preference. A state electoral officer collated these votes to establish a shortlist of five, then each trustee again ranked these in order of preference to decide the winner.
