This Archibald Prize-winning portrait by Jack Carington Smith of writer James McAuley (1917-1976) is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. McAuley is probably best known for his involvement in the Ern Malley poetry hoax in the 1940s. From 1961 he was professor of English at the University of Tasmania.
