Archibald Prize 1975

Entries: 298 (40 selected)
Exhibition dates: 24 January to 29 February 1976
Only selected works were exhibited; each artist could submit up to two works

A handling fee (of $2) was introduced for each entry.

John Bloomfield’s winning portrait of filmmaker Tim Burstall, painted from a blown-up photograph, was disqualified on the grounds that the picture had to be painted from life. The prize was rejudged and awarded to Kevin Connor.

The trustees make it clear that their decision ‘did not reflect in any way on the artistic merit of Mr Bloomfield’s entry’. The work subsequently became part of the Gallery’s collection.
