Jiawei Shen The artist couple: M Huang and F Yu

Miaozi Huang (born 1913) – depicted on the left of Jiawei Shen’s portrait – and Feng Yu (born 1916) are both artists, writers and art critics. Huang specialises in calligraphy and is also a poet. Yu is a painter and art theorist, and a former curator at the National Art Gallery of China in Beijing, where this painting is now located. They migrated to Australia from China shortly after the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 and took up teaching positions at Griffith University in Brisbane.
