This portrait by Tom Carment of footballer Don Idle was a finalist in the Daily Telegraph Sporting Portrait Prize, held in conjunction with the Archibald Prize 2000.

Idle is Carment’s father-in-law. Born in 1930, he attended Perth Modern School with future Australian prime minister Bob Hawke. He played 149 games of Australian Rules Football for Claremont between 1951 and 1957 and, in 1956, was selected for the Western Australian state side for whom he played three games.

'Don exemplifies the kind of dedication you found in the 1950s when people played sport for the love of it,’ says Carment.

Born in 1954, Carment studied at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney. He is also a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2000 with a self-portrait and has a work in the Dobell Prize for Drawing too.
