Marie Mansfield Study of Euan Macleod

Acclaimed artist Euan Macleod won the Archibald Prize in 1999. He has won numerous other art prizes including the Sulman Prize, the Blake Prize and the Gallipoli Prize. His work is held in many private and public collections including the National Gallery of Australia and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

‘I’ve admired Euan’s work for many years. We both come from Christchurch so I relate strongly to his deeply emotive work and landscapes. I hadn’t met Euan before asking him to sit for me so I started out with a few ideas on how I wanted to paint him. However, after meeting him, I realised I needed to step back from those,’ says Marie Mansfield.

‘I had imagined someone with a similar energy and intensity to his paintings but, in fact, he is a very laid-back character. This study is the result of me coming to terms with the person I met rather than who I envisaged painting.’

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Mansfield has a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication and has studied at the Julian Ashton Art School. She has been a finalist in various art awards including the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the Portia Geach Memorial Award and the Black Swan Portrait Prize.
