Kate Bergin Croquet, tea parties and other stories from Wonderland

oil on canvas

170 x 85 cm

As a still-life artist I use the white cloth-draped table as a stage whereupon a collection of related and unrelated objects and creatures come together to create layers of narratives.

In this painting I’m referring to Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. While placing creatures in sometimes humorous and absurd situations I hope to keep them just a little aloof. Their ability to stare back and challenge us creates a certain amount of tension and may have us wondering about their true place in the painting and whether they may be playing a quite different game whose rules we are completely unaware of.

(No animals were harmed in the making of this artwork.)
