Prudence Flint Queen Anne mirror

oil on linen

122 x 102 cm

I wanted a Queen Anne dressing table when I was a teenager and waited years to get one. I don’t have the space for it now but I like its weird singular function, the nostalgic design of the bevelled mirror and the strangely curved legs. Early on in the painting I struggled with the cliché of the narcissistic woman staring at herself in a mirror. I was hoping to embody a more conflicted monumental idea of what it is when we stare at a reflection of ourselves. This work is part of an ongoing series of women in front of mirrors.
