Greg Ades Fig

oil on linen

106.5 x 91 cm

Fig is part of a series that draws upon the places I have journeyed through over recent years and continues my exploration into the narratives contained within the interaction of objects in the Australian landscape.

The roots of a strangler fig crawl to earth from the branches of a host tree in search of sustenance. Interlacing, they coalesce and thicken, engulfing the host and depriving it of life. Eventually the host dies and rots away revealing a vacant elongated cage. The fig continues growing, filling the space vacated by the host.
