This work is from a series of paintings that I see as stills in a sort of painterly movie. Here a barefoot man with noticeably wet jeans sits beside a phone box and waits for his lift to the restoration/analysis section of the museum. What is in the box is a mystery. Has he collected specimens from the ocean? What is the connection to the image of Lake Mungo in the phone box normally reserved for advertisements?
I have recently been interested in the relationship between painting and the moving image, which has led to my collaborative work with film director Kasimir Burgess.
