Jason Moad What death leaves behind

oil on linen

101.5 x 75.5 cm

This is, perhaps, the most personal picture I have made. The concept arrived, almost fully formed, from the depths of my subconscious. The protracted process of actually painting it, however, was a little strange. I knew exactly what it was about but its themes made me uncomfortable enough to not want to examine them too closely.

I’d say it was about desire and sex meeting with the pressure of trying to have children. The title comes from a song by Welsh/English band Los Campesinos! and is a reminder that, even if I don’t have offspring, a few of my paintings might survive me, if I’m lucky.
