Neil Moore Ideal city

oil on canvas

153 x 214 cm

The blue monument in this painting started life many years ago as an illustration to accompany a newspaper article about how Australia was imagined before any Europeans arrived here. I thought I might borrow German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer’s iconic woodblock print of a rhinoceros and make a visual pun on our country. I’ve tried here to create a sense of incongruity by placing it in a setting derived from Renaissance images of an ideal city but with a few modern twists.
