Tom Langlands 45 rpm

acrylic on linen

180 x 240 x 10 cm

Music on vinyl and 1960s Australian hard-edge painting: 45 rpm is painted under the influence of both. Michael Johnson, Sydney Ball, Tony McGillick and Ron Robertson-Swann were key proponents of that glorious era. My art practice has been driven by their use of colour, form and scale, and also – from those whom I’ve come to know – their unique, often poetic, outlook on art and life. Conceptually I like to cherry-pick abstract elements from personal interests such as ’80s electronic music, screen grabs of Atari computer games, minimalist aesthetics in retro sportswear and sneakers, Chinese calligraphy and urban graffiti.
