For me, old movie theatres and their marquees have a haunting quality. Their luminous entrances and dark interiors seem like portals to another world, a dreamlike place where light breathes life into images.
Film titles that float on cinema marquees sometimes become a form of urban poetry, at times incongruous, at other times unnervingly prophetic. Are these mysterious messages from another dimension, or reflections of a world that is fading away?
I painted my first disappearing cinema sign images in 1974, and they continue to intrigue me.
