Gregory Hodge Ceremony

Ceremony is part of a recent series of work informed by hanging mobile constructions built in my studio as source material for paintings. Working from life as well as from photographs, this work acknowledges observational details of a previous hanging construction. I use trompe l’oeil and other painting techniques to generate illusions of overlapping shapes appearing to project forward out of the picture space, while painted cast shadows create complex spatial and perceptual shifts. I have intentionally restricted the colour of this painting to nuanced tones of predominantly black, white and grey. The illusionistic textures of the cut-out shapes resemble carpets, textiles and the crater-like surface of the moon.
