Jaye Early Absurdist video art is an acquired taste

synthetic polymer paint and fluorescent tape on canvas

122 x 122 cm

The controlled, geometric colour-filled spaces in this work deviate from my usually extemporaneous, almost frenzied, approach to painting. Pop culture narratives are hinted at with the inclusion of the floating animated hand, positioned in a peace sign (a ubiquitous gesture in online ‘selfie’ culture), and the seemingly unamused, crownless Jughead, with the two hidden figures at the top of the stairs. However, no definitive narratives are presented. With an emphasis on process, my aim was to blend spontaneous ideas with imaginative impulses to make visual contrasts that, in the end, created an image that was enjoyable and exciting to me.
