Abdul Abdullah Untitled

oil and aerosol on linen

156 x 125 cm

Belgium linen, Victorian ash stretcher bars and a pine box frame – spray-painted black. An anonymous message scrawled in white. The writing is deliberate, but not designed. The message takes the form of a rhetorical question that asserts itself without being loud, acting as both a proposition and an offering. The tension in the mark-making betrays the anxiety of the author. Anger is denied, reactions to injustice are suppressed, and personal agency is co-opted.
