Karen Black Floating silently

oil on gesso on wood

97 x 89 cm

Floating silently speaks to the myriad layers that women work to conceal in order to contend with the world around us. I see this layering as both psychological and physical. The bust of a woman overlooks the landscape atop a plinth – in place of what would typically be a male figure – as a way of commenting on overarching power structures and patriarchal systems. He drifts silently away in the background, detached like an island, possibly floating out into oblivion.
