Todd Fuller With whom I was united by every tie (Captain Moonlite)

Four decades ago, historian Garry Wotherspoon discovered letters written by Captain Moonlite before his hanging at Darlinghurst gaol. He thus unearthed a same-sex love story, which should have had its place in Australia’s bushranger history. In these letters, Andrew George Scott (aka Captain Moonlite) wrote that he wished to be buried alongside James Nesbitt. He went on to say that they were ‘one in hopes, in heart and soul and this unity lasted until he died in my arms’. In this animation (with sound by Paul Smith) I have drawn from archival material to create a hand-drawn and painted animation retelling the poignant story of Moonlite and his intimate, ill-fated relationship with Nesbitt.
