Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran Transforming into a multi-limbed figure

oil and synthetic polymer paint on linen

74 x 115 cm

This diptych portrays a mythological narrative involving a human (resembling me) encountering a multi-limbed figure in a tropical landscape. There is an instant connection between the figures, which ultimately results in their union. The transformation is energetic and tactile, bordering on the sexual.

The work reflects my interest in the socio-political functions of mythological and religious narratives. Recently, I have been exploring the impacts of Western dualisms. These ways of thinking are at odds with many Eastern philosophies. These tensions play out in the painting through references to Hindu mythology and the depiction of an ambiguous narrative that gestures towards fertility and creation.
